10 Breathtaking Modern Staircase Designs
I don't know about you, but there's something about a well designed staircase that makes my heart skip a beat. The first time I set foot in The Koenig House, I nearly gasped out loud when I saw the staircase leading up to the green carpeted catwalk. Now as the owner of this gorgeous staircase, I can tell you sometimes beauty really is pain because wool carpeting is extremely slippery while wearing socks! Unfortunately everyone in the family has learned that lesson more than once. I've also come to realize that a well designed staircase is more than just a functional component, it truly is a work of art. I've put together a collection of beautiful staircase designs for your viewing pleasure... and no, the Brady Bunch stairs is not one of them. Feast your eyes on these works of art.
This above staircase was part of a 1960's split level remodel of a home in Seattle done by Cast Architecture. I love the tiered shelves that are created by extending every other step. What a great way to make use of an otherwise awkward space. source
Terrazzo Tile, warm wood and green carpet... what's not to love. The entire interior or this restoration was so well done. Of course I'm biased being a lover of green carpet. source
There are times when I love the look, even when it might not be the most functional (safe) design. This home in New Zealand designed by Bossley Architects shows how sometime wood on more wood can look so rich and classic. source
This staircase looks little more post modern or 80's design, but I wanted to include it because I appreciate the extra work that went into revealing the stepped design underneath. I love the angles it creates. The unique visual transforms what would otherwise be a plain boring stairwell. source
The stair railing on this above home in Bali reminds me a lot of mine at The Koenig House. Black, square, metal spindles are so classic and never go out of style. source
Here's another great example of how the underside of the staircase presents a great visual opportunity to get creative. I love how the rise on this staircase is created using boards turned on their side, revealing the end grain creating striped pattern. source
Another example of a beautiful design that could perhaps be a bit dangerous. I can imagine a party guest impaling themselves on one of those golden rods after too many martinis. Still, I love the use of interesting angles in the design. source
Sometimes it's less about the staircase itself and more about how it fits in with the surroundings. I love how the irregular flagstone flooring is contrasted by the straight vertical slats that extend floor to ceiling along the side of the staircase. source
A staircase doesn't have to be grand to be interesting. Many modest mid-century homes are split level ranches. This is a great example of how a simple change in the spindle design can make all the difference. source
Last but not least, my favorite- the staircase in The Koenig House. The curve at the bottom is an interesting way to reach the first floor level without having to create a second landing. But like I eluded to earlier, use caution. Those last few steps are a doozy.
So no matter the material, these modern staircases designs were made to wow. Which is your favorite?
xoxo - Michele
