5 Interior Design Trends to Take 2023 by Storm!

Now is the time of year everyone posts their predictions for the styles we'll see more of in the new year. Quite frankly, I'm not one for trends, but there's no denying that interior fashions come and go. Whether we realize it or not, we are inspired by the state of the world around us. From T.V. pop culture to the isles of Target, by the time trends become 'mainstream' I'm usually already over them. The following trend predictions are things I would love to see more of in mainstream design and my bet is you will in 2023.

1. Wood Paneling and other Natural Materials and Colors

“Natural wood is poised for a comeback. People are tired of the cold grey and white interiors of the last few years. ”

Natural materials will dominate interiors in 2023. Look for warm shades of wood, stone and rattan to grace everything from walls to furniture. This isn't the wood paneling of your Grandparents 1980's basement rec room. Wood on walls can look extremely modern. We've been seeing more and more of this and if you've seen The Koenig House, you know it's a style I'm all in for! This year will be a push back from grey and white as warmer and more natural colors like terracotta, shades of brown even emerald and mauve dominate the interior landscape.

2. Pattern and Texture Continue to Reign

Wallpaper has no doubt been having a moment and I don't see that going away anytime soon. I love the use of bold patterns especially in small spaces. Now with companies like Spoonflower you can find any patterned wall covering you'd like and many of them are in a removable option, perfect for renters or just a temporary change. Adding in layers of pattern and texture through the use of wallpaper, textiles, fur rugs or even plants, give a space depth and character similar to what is found in nature. I've been seeing people go bold with pattern on pattern and I for one am loving it!

3. Return to Compartmentalization vs. Open Concept

As we come back together after living through the pandemic years, people are craving connection. I predict we will see the return of the formal dining room and other similar spaces. Having a place to create an intimate atmosphere where we can share a meal, play games or enjoy a cocktail will be high on people's priority lists as we invite guests back into our homes. Setting the tone for a room's activity is more easily done when you don't have to contend with distractions. Why else would the men retreat to the study to have an after dinner drink? Having spaces clearly defined allows us to really lean in to the space's intended purpose. So, can we please bring back conversation pits!?! Pretty please!

4. Vintage and Antiques Take Center Stage

Now THIS is something that has always been my passion... but now it seems to be going mainstream! As supply chain issues continue to plague easy access to cheap products, people are looking more to the past. Not only are vintage pieces generally better quality construction, but they also come with a story. Adding in family heirlooms or thrifted pieces that speak to you, help create a look that is uniquely yours! I personally am looking forward to the end of companies like Wayfair and the "fast furniture" culture. Real quality curated interiors take time. Which leads me to the next thing I see becoming a trend...

5. Highly Curated and Customized Interiors

Have you ever walked into someone's home and thought, "this place is SO them!"? This is what I think good interior design should be; a true reflection of the personalities that live there! I welcome seeing less trendy interiors in exchange for spaces that are highly curated and unique. I love a home filled with meaningful furniture and collections that tell the story of the collector! I think there's nothing more soulless than a home that looks like you plucked it straight out of an Art Van showroom. When someone takes the time to create a space that speaks to them, it shows. This has always been what I strive to do in my own home.

At the end of the day, your home is your own. It's important that you surround yourself with what makes you happy! Which of these trend predictions do you love? What current trends do you wish would go away? I'd love to hear from you! xoxo - Michele
