Modernizing a Mid-Century Bathroom
We were so lucky that the original bathrooms in The Koenig House were very tastefully designed! The problem with restoring a mid-century home is that after 60 years of use, a bathroom really starts to look worse for the wear. We've been committed to restoration over renovation and thus far have restored and reused as many of the original components as possible. Unfortunately, it's looking like we will have to take down the tile in bathrooms because it was applied without a waterproof membrane. Several spots are coming loose. Also, it will be necessary to access and replace the leaky copper plumbing. We'll know more once digging in. All that being said, we plan to keep the bathrooms accurate to the current 1960's aesthetic. Below are photos of our current bathrooms.
I've been gathering tile inspiration pics for the renovations. The main bath we plan to keep most of the cherry paneling and replace the tile in the shower with either orange or terracotta. The floor tile will be replaced as well. The small guest bath with shower stall will be replaced with a similar color to the current teal. Lastly, the upstairs girls' bath with the fabulous green Italian glass tile will be preserved (if possible) or replaced with a very similar product. We will know more once we dig in. Here I've put together some of my favorite 60's inspired tiled bathrooms that have a similar vibe of what we are going for.
This is the exact color tile I'm leaning towards using in the main bath. I love the warm terracotta and the vertical pattern. Source: @michaelgodmerstudio
We will most likely keep the current color theme in the guest bath. I really like this blue/green with the light maple cabinetry. Source: @fbnconstruction
I also love this bright blue with the warm cherry wood. Source: @stussiluquedesign
Even through I've already got my heart set on terracotta, there's a part of me that's really wanting to do a bright orange in the main bathroom! Perhaps I'll save the orange for my kitchen. Source: @_lisa_dawson_
Here's another gorgeous example of a warm terracotta tile combined with dark floors, light walls and rich wood tones: Source: @cp3do
Avocado will always have a special place in my heart. This green Fireclay tile is definitely in the running for the girl's upstairs bathroom if we have to take down the glass. Source: @fireclaytile
It's hard to think mid-century bath without thinking PINK! If I had the room, I'd build a dog washing station in my laundry room just like the above sink. Love the curved tile. Source: @design_angels_bathrooms
Again... how can you not love a pink bathroom!?! 4x4 tile never goes out of style IMO. Source: @Design_angels_bathrooms
I can't compile a list of beautifully tiled bathrooms without including this gem. This time in colour's bath is so swoon worthy. I love the orange sink on the green tile. Of course, green is my favorite color! Source: @thistimeincolour
So I'm sure you can see the theme here. Which color scheme gets your vote? What would you do?

We have a Sholz Mark 58 home and are doing as much restoration as possible, unfortunately a lot of the cool funky things about it weren’t taken care of properly by the second owners, and we’re having to replace a lot more than we expected and hoped for. We saved a lot of the baby powder blue tile from our main bath to try and reuse when we renovate it. we had to gut the bathtub and surround due to a leak! We still have a cute pink half bath, but the second owners redid the second bathroom and left nothing original! I love your ideas for your bathrooms, definitely going to use them for inspiration!
